"The Cabin"

This weekend we went to one of our favorite places, "The Cabin". The cabin is up by Oakley about an hour and a half away. Craig, his dad, and his uncle built it almost 30 years ago.

When Craig and I first started dating, he would ask Austin and Morgan and I to go up to the cabin with he and his girls. I thought it would be a very old rustic thing and I am not really all that into camping, so I would find excuses to stay home. Well, I finally agreed to go with him and when I saw it, I was pleasantly surprised and quite upset with myself for not going sooner. I fell in love with it.

Craig even proposed to me up there.

Some of our favorite things to do at the cabin are:

Ride 4 wheelers

Look for animals - we have seen moose, deer, badgers, a fox, chipmunks, beavers, rock chucks, hummingbirds, and woodpeckers.

Go on hikes

Play games

Play horse shoes

Feed the deer right out of our hands

Fish at Smith & Moorehouse

Kayak on Smith & Moorehouse

Sled in the winter time

Play in the river - in fact, Craig drops the kids off the overpass into the river. They have to do a cannonball so they don't hit their legs on the bottom.

Midnight walks

Prepare Dutch Oven

Watch movies

Read

Best of all - RELAX

Some of my fondest memories of the cabin are Craig's practical jokes. One time he sent the kids upstairs to go to bed and when they thought we were asleep, he got a long fishing pole and started tapping on the window upstairs where the kids were. All of a sudden they were screaming and running downstairs to us. We told them we hadn't heard anything, but we would listen. This went on quite a few more times; the kids were almost in tears and I couldn't keep a straight face. It was so funny and they were not happy with us at the time - now they laugh about it.

Another time Craig went into the bathroom and climbed out the window. We all thought he was still in the bathroom when the lights went out and someone started knocking on the floor. I am pretty sure that people all over the mountain heard our screams.

Many times the power goes out and it is a lot of fun to light the kerosene lamps and play games.

A few years ago, my mom and sister and I went there to scrapbook. We had a great time and got a lot accomplished. We packed up and were getting ready to head home when I slammed the gate and forgot to move my finger out of the way - my finger was smashed, broken, and half off. Needless to say, I am much more careful when it comes to the gate.

Our family absolutely loves the cabin. I am grateful to be able to go there quite a few times each year.
